USPS: New Mailing Standards for Lithium Batteries

USPS Revises Publication 52, Hazardous, Restricted, and Perishable Mail standards to align with other agencies.

On August 17, 2017, the United States Postal Service published a Postal Bulletin announcing a new standard for mail pieces containing lithium batteries. These revisions were made to align the USPS mailing standards with recent changes made by other federal regulatory agencies regarding the transportation of lithium batteries.

ICAO council has adopted the recommendations of the ICAO Air Navigation Commission prohibiting all lithium batteries shipped by themselves (not contained in or packed with equipment) for transport as cargo on passenger aircraft. Additionally, lithium-ion batteries must be shipped at a state of charge not exceeding 30% of their rated design capacity. The final changes to the provisions for lithium batteries are effective as of April 1st, 2016.
